Are you coachable?

"When you’re not coachable, you’re not able to see yourself fully and objectively.

When you’re not able to see yourself fully and objectively, you’re not able to maximize learning.

When you’re not able to maximize learning, you’re not able to grow.

When you’re not able to grow, you’re not able to win. " ~ Scott Ginsberg ~

This concept of coachability applies to many people in many situations. Of course this is most relevant in the atmosphere of CrossFit.  I also found this to be relevant at the Level 2 seminar a few weeks ago.  I had to open myself up to criticism (which I will admit I'm not always great at taking) in order to improve and grow as a coach.

Ask yourself if you are coachable, in your job, at crossfit, etc.

Scott Ginsberg also lays out 16 mistakes of utterly uncoachable people.  Make sure your not making too many of them.

It's all in how you look at it

This woman takes what others consider a handicap and a weakness and she turns it into her biggest asset.  What most think of as a disadvantage she sees as an advantage she has over others.  Take 10 minutes to watch this video and then re-evaluate what you consider your disadvantages and your struggles to be and then re-evaluate how you view them.  Maybe they aren't disadvantages at all.

Yum

I found this great poem that seemed appropriate considering the upcoming Paleo Challenge!  While I am eating an apple right now, I did just get a bunch of fresh veggies that I am looking forward to cooking up.

Eat Your Vegetables

"It is sweet as sugar," she would effuse
at bean pods and fresh-dug carrots,
at squash, asparagus, and newly-shucked peas,
water chestnuts and vine-ripened tomatoes.
An utterance redolent with an almost religious
tenderness – that these common fruits
and tubers should shine beyond all call of duty,
and deliver not just sustenance, but also flavor,
though not so much to overwhelm. Hers the God
of neither whirlwind, nor burning bush,
but of produce – raw, quick-steamed or wok'd,
light on the salt and pepper, buttered to perfection.
Awe at the unvarnished, the effortless, the gentle,
the veracious vegetable of this world.
Which needs no other God to make it sweet.
Which needs no excuse to be.
"Smile awhile," she'd bid her melancholy son.
"Eat your vegetables."

October Overhaul

Sometimes things just need to change.  Sometimes it's big things and sometimes it's the small things.  This month I am changing a lot of things in my life.

First of all I am recommitting myself to being a die hard CrossFitter.  I recently took about 2 weeks off from working out because I was having a lot of knee pain and not recovering from my workouts.  I know this was the best thing for me but sometimes it's hard to follow the advice I easily give out to others.  During this time I felt guilty for not working out and then I just started to feel bad about myself.  I felt like I was broken and unfixable.  So this month I am getting back on track.  My knee pain has subsided thanks to endless foam rolling and rest.  So now I'm going to stop feeling sorry for myself and get to CrossFitting!

Secondly, my diet needs to be cleaned up.  For almost a year now I have not been eating grains except for the occasional splurge.  In the last 3 weeks I have gone off the deep end.  Bagels and cream cheese, cookies, gallons of ice cream and so many other paleo sins.  I did use my birthday as an excuse, but I can't use that one forever.  So back on the paleo band wagon.  I'm even going to cut out dairy which has always been a challenge for me.  I tried to quit coffee this morning too, but when my alarm went off at 4:25am I changed my mind.  Maybe tomorrow!

Other things on the list

-more sleep

-more water

-more artsy time

-less stress/more meditation

I am just publicly recommitting myself to a lifestyle that I know provides me with a better quality of life. Sometimes just putting it out there makes it more real.
